This is a link to Mamady Keita Djembe Rhythm Traditional Mandingue page. Quote from the page “The djembe is not reserved only for tradition. It is a popular instrument that can harmonize with all other instruments. It is open to all. There are performances and then there is the tradition. One must not confuse them. They are completely different.” It also discusses his view on the relationship between an instrument and the tradition it emerges from. Some of the views seem to contradict the quote here and may not stand up to experience but, the concepts are worth thoroughly thinking about. There are links to other educational material related to the traditions that are also worth exploring from there.
